Labour Day marks yet another successful year for 1620 Electrical Workers. Together we have become stronger than we ever were before. As the foundation of this Local Union, it’s because of you that we continue to build our future together.
I am very honoured to represent members working with our employer partners; Newfoundland Power, Colliers International and Outside Construction, including the Lower Churchill Project. Because of these partnerships and this Union, 1620 Electrical Workers is a very strong voice in the workplace. This strength has enabled us to achieve many improved working terms and conditions, ultimately creating a better life for all of us at work and at home.
In the past number of years, with your involvement, we have had many successes. I am very proud to say that 1620 ethically prides itself on full transparency and honesty. Today, we are a very progressive and modernized Local Union.
Just a few years ago, many things were not in order in our Local Union; however, with your help and responsible leadership, we have accomplished so much, including getting our unit meetings reactivated and stepping up member engagement. Our members receive all the details, which enables them to make informed decisions. This is how it should be.
We are light years ahead of where we were, but we still have work to do as we continue with our member development and approved Local Union Strategic Plan. This plan will see us continue to focus on communications, training, orientation, organizing, and 1620 branding. We are concentrating on everything you told us to do and we will continue to work hard to improve for our futures.
Everything you have today is because your Union fought for it and now you and your family have a reasonable quality of life that always puts safety first. Labour Day gives us an opportunity to honour our members, past and present – their accomplishments, as well as their sacrifices and struggles. Working conditions, social benefits, such as the Canada Pension Plan and Workers’ Compensation, are the result of the persistence, perseverance and the struggles of the working class.
While we gather this long weekend for a well-deserved break with family and friends, let us also mark this Labour Day by committing to getting even stronger. We must continue to fight for an always improving and safer work environment; fight to keep our rights and be respected for the great work we offer our employers.
I personally thank you, our Sisters and Brothers of past and present, for your hard work and dedication.
United We Are Here for You – 70 Years Strong!
HAPPY LABOUR DAY EVERYONE!!
